Watersports in Kerala
Kerala boasts of 44 rivers in addition to myriad lakes, lagoons and backwaters. When it comes to water, the state is a veritable aquatic superpower. Visitors can go canoeing, kayaking, parasail above trout-filled waters, scuba dive, snorkeling, windsurf beside pristine shorelines, and man their own 'Kettuvallam' [houseboat]; all within a mere five-day period.
Whitewater rafting
Periyar River is a whitewater rafter's dream at US$5 per run. Rafting expeditions are launched at various points along the river, depending on the rafter's aptitude and the time duration. Rafters can enjoy stretches of rapids interspersed with glimpses of wildlife and myriad bird species that call Kerala home. The region was on most rafters' radars long before it occupied pride of place on the tourist map. Periyar is ideal for those new to, and anxious about, whitewater rafting; between the rapids, calm waters allow rafters to soak in the fertile landscape, providing a combination of high adrenaline thrills and harmony. At dusk, visitors can pull over to the shoreline and sleep astride the river's edge, then wake to the sun reflecting off the raft and cook breakfast over a fire.
Snorkeling
A 'Kettuvallam' is the best way to explore the backwaters. Each boat accommodates two couples and a three-man crew, including a chef. Spots such as Kovalam Beach provide ample opportunities for snorkeling. The emerald waters harbor unrivaled snorkeling and swimming spots. Masks and flippers are available to view the tropical fish darting amongst the rocks. Surfboards can also be hired on the beach. The whole experience costs less than US$5. Unfortunately, the beach sometimes harbor crowds.
Catamaran cruise
More expansive trips will lead visitors to virgin coves, islands and deserted shoreline campgrounds. Visitors should not leave the area without a taste of the Robinson Crusoe moment: a beach of one's own. Alternatively, a Catamaran cruise aboard a country raft is very popular.
Windsurfing
Visitors must be aware that the waters can get very shallow and may not be conducive to diving in most spots. However, the flat surface is ideal for windsurfers who are seeking a slick ride; there isn't much to worry about from a safety viewpoint as trained lifeguards keep a vigil on tourists, thereby reducing risks of accidents.
Diving
The near-perfect visibility of Vembanad Lake makes it the most popular diving destination in the state. The clear calm waters, diverse marine life, and brilliant ridges make the lake diving enthusiasts' paradise-but Kerala's flagship snorkeling destination overshadows the copious dive sites.
