Kollam Backwaters
The shoreline district of Kollam is one of the oldest ports on the Malabar Coast. It is the hub of the country's cashew trading and processing industry, and the state's marine produce industry. Historically, Kollam was the center of a flourishing mercantile community. Chinese fishing nets along the backwaters are indicative of the trade links with China.
The premier spot in Kollam is Ashtamudi Lake, which envelops 30 per cent of the district and forms a gateway to the backwaters. Lush foliage, azure waters, and eight creeks lined with palm trees and coconut groves mirror the Kollam backwaters depicted on myriad postcards. Visitors are advised to get their requisite shot of souvenirs from the quiet town, and then hire a 'Kettuvallam' [houseboat] to leisurely cruise the Kollam Backwaters where they are more likely to share space with rare birds, ducks and otters than tourists.
Sailing aboard a Kettuvallam is tailor-made for languorous decadence. Spices and flora growing along the fringes of the backwaters perfume the air while sheltered coves, rich flora, and a picturesque countryside transport visitors to a wonderland far removed from the buzz of city life. People have the option to skipper their own houseboat or hire a punter to do the honors. One need not be an experienced paddler to navigate a Kettuvallam. Piloting these boats is easier than it might seem, and the tranquil waters are acquiescent for novices to get their sea legs.
Sailing has a distinct advantage over land resorts in terms of absolute mobility and offshore isolation. The longest backwater cruises is one from Kollam to Alappuzha, which takes eight hours. Exotic migratory birds and flowers [lotus and water lilies] embellish the backwaters, and local women hawking coconuts in rustic boats make the cruise unique. Although the houseboat's raison d'être is exploring the countryside, there are plenty of opportunities for sun bathing, swimming, and fishing, should the urge strike visitors to do more than raise their glass or feast on spicy local cuisine at any of the small restaurants along the shoreline. The same can be done on board if they would rather dine in the privacy of their houseboat.
The nearest airport is the Thiruvananthapuram Airport, about 76 km from the city. Kollam is on the railway route and the main station is Kollam Junction. A good road network links Kollam to most towns in the state.
